DEA Requirement Information
On December 29, 2022, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 enacted a new one-time, eight-hour training requirement for all Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-registered practitioners on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
What You Need to Know
The training does not have to occur in one session and past trainings do count. Training can be cumulative across multiple sessions. Furthermore, practitioners can count past trainings from relevant providers (see the official DEA letter for a complete list), including the DATA-2000 Waiver training, toward their eight hours.
If you have ever taken a course to meet the West Virginia Board of Medicine's 3-hour Drug Diversion requirement, that course will count towards the 8-hour DEA requirement. This includes any of the Pain & Addiction web courses offered by the WVU Office of Continuing Education.
For those who have completed one or more of these WVU courses, you can access your credits by using our Online Transcript Site. Once you are on the website:
- Choose "I would like to login with my State License number"
- Select your State of Licensure
- Enter your Last Name
- Enter your License Number
- Choose the Begin Date and End Date
- Click "View my Transcript"

Please note: All practitioners that are board certified in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry from the American Board of Medical Specialties, the American Board of Addiction Medicine, or the American Osteopathic Association are deemed to have satisfied this training.
