Organized by the Rational Drug Therapy Program, this session will be held from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Emphasis is placed on effective screening, early intervention, and appropriate referral to treatment. The course highlights real-world strategies to reduce stigma, support patient engagement, and improve outcomes. Participants will gain actionable tools to incorporate non-stigmatizing, patient-centered approaches into everyday clinical practice.

This program was made in collaboration with Michael Londner, MD (Chief Medical Officer, Berkeley Medical Center, Emergency Medicine) and Angela Gray, BSN, RN-SUD (Case Manager, Berkeley Medical Center, Emergency Medicine).

Target Audience

This program is designed for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, and social workers who are involved in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with substance use disorders.

Learning Objectives

Following this course, participants should be able to:

  • Identify validated screening tools for substance use in clinical settings.

  • Describe DSM-5-TR criteria used to diagnose opioid and stimulant use disorders.

  • Compare evidence-based treatment options for OUD and StUD, including FDA-approved medications for OUD and selected off-label options for StUD.

  • Apply referral and follow-up pathways that support engagement in care.
